SleepUncovered provides educational information about sleep. It is not medical advice. The distinction matters, and this page explains it.

Information, not advice

Content on this site — articles, calculators, the problem finder, the glossary — describes what sleep research shows and what specialists generally recommend. None of it is a substitute for individual medical assessment and advice.

Two adults with the same symptoms can have different underlying causes. A guide that's right for one might be wrong for the other. That's why we publish evidence-based information instead of prescriptions.

What this means in practice

  • Don't self-diagnose serious problems. If you have symptoms that suggest sleep apnoea, narcolepsy, REM behaviour disorder, or another sleep disorder, see a clinician. Our when to see a doctor guide gives specific criteria.
  • Don't stop medications based on our content. Some sleep medications need careful tapering. Discuss changes with the prescribing clinician.
  • Don't treat calculator outputs as medical guidance. Our calculators are useful estimates; they aren't personalised clinical assessments.
  • In emergencies, get help. If sleep problems are paired with chest pain, suicidal thoughts, severe psychiatric symptoms, or any acute medical concern, contact your doctor, NHS 111, or emergency services (999) as appropriate.

Pregnancy, children, and existing conditions

Some of our content discusses supplements, medications, and interventions that may not be safe during pregnancy, for children, or for people with certain medical conditions. Where we're aware of specific risks, we flag them. We can't enumerate every interaction or contraindication. If in doubt, ask a pharmacist or doctor.

The evidence is calibrated, not absolute

Sleep science evolves. We use evidence ratingsso you can see how confident the underlying research is. Even “Strong” evidence can be superseded; even well-replicated findings have exceptions. Treat the information as the best current summary, not as a permanent verdict.
